Ship, sand, and some basic lighting created in 3ds max. Caustics, streaks, and compositing done in Photoshop.
I spent about 4 days trying to get the caustics to render properly and while I found a lot of ways that I shouldn't do it, I didn't have much success getting the water to actually make caustics onto the boat, so I ended up painting them in manually.
I made this for a game my company is having me make new art for to modernize it. I'm pretty happy with it overall, I just wish I'd had more success with doing the lights in max. Oh well, next project. This one was almost out of time.
This one is far simpler than it looks, actually. I modeled the ship the way I'd model anything (planes and boxes). The ground was a plane, high poly, with a displacement map to give it some hills. Then, I added a blue volume fog with an apparatus to the whole scene. That's where the 3ds max ended and the photoshop began. I rendered out one version with the fog (for the dark parts) and one version without the fog (for the brighter parts). In photoshop, I layered the two renders and used masks to sort of fade between them. I painted in all the caustics by hand. For that, simply find a caustics reference, grab a white paint brush, and try to copy what's in your reference. I hope that helps a little, this is far simpler to make than it might look!
