Armada, the city of stolen ships, from what is probably the most enthralling book I'll ever read, China Mieville's "The Scar". I hope I did it justice.

About 6 or 7 hours in Photoshop CS. Created entirely in Photoshop, and I used a couple Googled references to find out what ships look like. Water brushes made by me!

Progression here: [link]

Update! Armada was published in the June 14th 2010 issue of the UK publication New Statesman! That makes Armada my first-ever professionally published piece of artwork. That's TOTALLY RAD!!!!!

Hm . . I haven't read "The Scar". The only book of his I've read is "Un Lun Dun" which was absolutely amazing.

Just finished reading The Scar, and I have to say that this is how I pictured Armada. Good job!

Wow... I'm rereading The Scar, and this is amazing. Almost exactly how I imagined Armada to look. It's a beautiful picture, I'm so jealous of your mad skills!

This picture is quite mesmerising in that it kinda 'softens' the hard image of Armada that comes across in the book (in the story its full of the bitterly oppressed, cut throats, opposing neighbourhoods and vampires).

However I believe that this vision of Armada (at least to me) must be the serene, welcoming Armada that the indigenous Armadans think of while they are away pillaging and press ganging. They may have been bastards, but its their home.

I can easily see some bright, colourful fireworks going off in the sky above the city in this picture and when I do that, and it makes me want to live on Armada.
